Below-Ground MCWS Distribution Pipework Replacement
Due to the age, condition and corroding below-ground mains cold water services (MCWS) distribution pipework, PJ BIRD were awarded the contract to undertake the complete replacement of the distribution network throughout the grounds of Corby Community Hospital.
The project presented a significant logistical and operational challenge, with the new distribution network required to serve 4 separate hospital buildings, while maintaining the continuous operation of the healthcare facilities.
Scope of Works
PJ BIRD were responsible for the replacement of the hospital’s complete below-ground MCWS distribution network, including:
- Below-ground MCWS distribution: Replacement of the existing ageing and corroding distribution pipework throughout the hospital grounds.
- Multi-building distribution: New MCWS distribution serving 4 individual buildings across the hospital site.
- Phased works: Careful planning and phased installation to maintain water services to operational healthcare facilities throughout the project.
- Building connections: Coordination and connection of the new distribution network into each of the existing hospital buildings.
- Testing and commissioning: Full testing, commissioning and handover of the completed MCWS distribution system.
Working Within a Live Healthcare Environment
A key requirement of the project was that the works were completed without disruption to the NHS’s day-to-day healthcare operations.
Given the critical nature of the hospital environment, PJ BIRD worked closely with the hospital and project teams to carefully plan the works, coordinate shutdowns where required and implement a phased installation strategy.
The replacement works had to be undertaken while the hospital remained fully operational, requiring detailed planning, close communication and careful control of each stage of the installation.
